Abstract

We report a series of seven cases of unexplained perioperative pulmonary oedema in our centre between 2000 to 2007. A record of unexplained pulmonary oedema was kept and additional data was obtained from the records of the operating
theatres, anaesthetic record charts, intensive care unit and surgical wards. All the patients belonged to the American Society of Anesthesiologists’ (ASA) physical status class I, and developed acute pulmonary oedema in the immediate post-operative period without any apparent predisposing factor. The diagnosis was made clinically and immediate resuscitation was carried out in all cases. The patients were subsequently transferred to the intensive care unit for further management, monitoring and investigations, but no cardiac compromise was found. The patients were followedup until discharge from the hospital and were also seen in the outpatient clinic. All but one of the patients survived.
