Christian Ethos and Women Liberation: Challenges and Prospects in the Nigerian Church

Rotimi Omotoye

Abstract

In Nigeria, the campaign for women liberation and leadership in the Church, in politics, and socio-economic spheres has become heightened in the last few decades. In this study, we shall examine the challenges of the principles of freedom, liberty and non-discrimination, as demonstrated by Jesus Christ. He is seen as a Liberator and a Revolutionary who went against the tradition of the Jewish people as regards the position accorded to women in the Jewish society. He associated with women who were oppressed, marginalized and treated as personae non-grata in the society. He broke the tradition of discrimination, which was predicated on gender and race. Based on this background, this study suggests that women in the African setting should be allowed to lead in the Church.
