Abstract

The photograph collection of the University Archives, University of KwaZulu-Natal (Pietermaritzburg Campus), is introduced as an example of a collection. Basic principles for the acquisition, storage, provision of access, and handling and use of photographs, are presented. The applicability of ‘acceptable' American and British storage enclosures for use in the South African climate is questioned. Doubt is expressed regarding the role of digitisation in long-term access to a collection where resources are extremely limited.
