Abstract

Objective: To determine the relative frequency of cephalic and breech presentations at the Kenyatta National Hospital, Nairobi.

Method: Retrospective study of 1154 obstetric patients examined by ultrasonic scanning.

Results: Breech presentations were much more frequent (26.7-27.1%) between 21 weeks and 28 weeks gestation than at or near term. At gestational ages close to term, cephalic presentations were increasingly more common. Between the 37th and the 40th week of gestation, 88.4% of fetal presentations were cephalic whilst 8.5% presented by the breech.

Conclusion: Breech presentations should not be considered abnormal until late in pregnancy.
