Abstract

In a descriptive study in ABSUTH (Abia State University Teaching Hospital), Aba, a total of 317 expectant mothers were sampled randomly during the first and second stage of labour for the presence of malaria parasites. In the peripheral blood films and maternal anaemia. The mean haemoglobin concentration for mothers with light (+), medium (++) and heavy (+++), malaria parasites, were 9.9 g/dl and 9.2 g/dl respectively.

Mean maternal haemoglobin level of 9.6 g/dl was strongly correlated with malaria parasite. Plasmodium falciparum was the most commonly occurring malaria parasite with prevalence rate of 82 per cent. Both the thin and thick blood films stained with Leishman and Giemsa stains respectively. The finding showed that anaemia in pregnancy due to malaria parasite is density dependent.
