Bacteriological Assessment of “Pure Water” Samples in Ogun State of Nigeria

Abstract



The bacterial content of 45 brands of ‘Pure Water' samples in Sagamu, Abeokuta and Ijebu-Ode were analyzed. Forty-two (93.3%) of the samples examined yielded bacteria growth. The membrane filtration method and the multiple tube method were employed in the analysis of the ‘pure water' samples.
The predominantly isolated organism was Staphylococcus albus. Other isolates include: Bacillus subtilis, Enterococcus faecalis, Klebsiella sp., Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella sp. and Staphylococcus aureus. Coliforms were isolated from 53.3% of the ‘pure water' samples while Escherichia coli of faecal origin was isolated from two brands. Against expectation, 85.7% of NAFDAC registered samples of ‘pure water' examined yielded bacteria growths.
This study has shown clearly that a greater percentage of the so-called ‘pure water' are variably contaminated with bacterial agents.
