Antimicrobial Evaluation of Ethanolic Extract of Pistia Stratiotes

A Banso

Abstract

The antibacterial activity of ethanolic leaf extract of Pista stratiotes against Streptococcus species, Escherichia coli, Staphilococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae was studied by the agar diffusion and broth dilution methods. Streptococcus species was the most sensitive to the plant material while Escherichia coli was the most resistant. The minimum inhibitory concentration of the plant extract ranged between 20% (w/v) and 50% (w/v). Thus extract of Pistia stratiotes could be useful as a source of antibiotics against some disease causing bacteria.
