Deep Brain Stimulation: An Update Review Article.

C.O Dawodu

Abstract

Deep brain stimulation [DBS] involves the stereo tactic placement of an electrode into the brain. This is done in advanced countries and then only at few centers. This practice is modifying the challenges imposed on the health sector, limiting the frustrations of health personnel and elevating affected patients distress. Though the modalities and utilities of deep brain stimulation [DBS] has been accepted in advanced countries, however it is yet to be studied in upcoming countries like Nigeria. This review will be tailored along the following points:

1) The mechanism of DBS
2) The existing evidence and results for the management of specific disease conditions
3) Its role and evolvement from animal studies to human management of disease conditions by focusing on epilepsy
4) Future prospects of DBS globally and its relevance to our local practice
