Burn injury in pregnancy at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Enugu, South East Nigeria

Abstract

Background: There is a paucity of published data on specific problems of a burn injured pregnant woman. This paper highlights the management challenges following burn injury in pregnancy and benefits of urgent delivery following burn injury in term pregnancy.
Methods: Case reports and discussion of two pregnant women who presented burn injuries at National Orthopaedic Hospital, Enugu, South East Nigeria.
Results: Excellent maternal and foetal survival was achieved with no mortality-
Conclusion: Pregnancy does not affect the prognosis of burn injury. Adequate maternal resuscitation is necessary for foetal survival. The age of pregnancy should inform treatment decisions.
