Nigerian Pidgin in Chinua Achebe‘s Fictions

Abstract

It is sad to observe that, in Nigeria, Nigerian Pidgin (Naija) has not gained its needed attention, irrespective of the fact that it is a neutral language of in.The present studytherefore, examines Naija in literary work, with a focus on Chinua Achebe‘s: A Man of the People and Anthills of Savannah. The study aims to ascertain the extent NP is used in literature and to show how characters in the novels studied, use Pidgin.Selected excerpts from the novels are data for the study. Through a purposive sampling method, ten excerpts were selected for the study. The study adopts Spencer Oatey‘s rapport management as its theoretical consideration. Finding from the study showsthat characters in the novels use NPas a rapport management strategy.The study recommends that the teaching of Nigerian Pidgin to children in lower basic schools be implemented, particularly, in areas where NP is a first language.
