The awareness of blood group and genotype status among senior secondary school students in Egor Local Government area, Edo state

Abstract

Background: Blood group is the classification of blood based on the type of antigens and antibodies found on the blood cells while genotype is the haemoglobin present on the blood cells.
Aim: The research sought to find out the level of awareness of blood group and genotype status among senior secondary school students in Egor Local Government Area, Edo State.
Method: Five research hypotheses were raised and answered in the course of study. The descriptive research method was used. Two hundred students from three public and three private schools formed the sample for the research. A valided questionnaire was the instrument for data collection. The questionnaire was analysed using the statistical package for social sciences {SPSS} and the results were shown in frequencies, percentages and bar chart.
Results: Out of the 195 students that participated in the study, 89% of males, 95.9% of females are aware of their blood group while 78.4% of males and 90.8% of females are aware of their own genotype status. A total of 115 (59.4%) students from public schools and 80 {41.0%} of students from private schools participated in the research.
Conclusion: The awareness of blood group in public school was 91.3% and 95% in private schools.
