Abstract

This study examines school members behaviour management and security training a correlates of quality secondary school environment in Rivers State. Two (2) research question and 2 hypotheses were answered and tested in the study respectively. The population of the study was the, 268 public secondary schools in Rivers. These schools have a total number of 11,968 teachers, from which 479 (4%) were selected as sample, using the simple random sampling technique and determined using the Taro Yamene minimum standard formula. Respondents of the study responded to 2 sets of instruments. These were the validated 15-item School Members Behaviour Management and Security Training Scale (QMBMSTS) and the 20 – item Quality Secondary School Environment Scale (QSSES), designed by the researchers in the modified-4-points likert rating scale, with reliability indices of 0.82 and 0.88 respectively, obtained using Cronbach Alpha Statistical formula. Pearson Product Moment Correlation Co-efficient was used in answering the research questions while the hypotheses were subjected to critical probability value of 0.05 for the purpose of testing them. The findings of the study showed a positive high correlation between school members behaviour management strategies and quality secondary school environment and moderate correlation between school members security training and quality secondary school environment. The study also show significant correlation between school members behaviour management and security training and quality secondary school environment in Rivers State. The study concludes that school members behaviour management and security training have direct bearings on quality school environment in Rivers State. Consequently, it is recommended that Teacher Training Institutions and Ministry of Education should give priority to behaviour management just as there should be continuous security training for school members in line with the exigencies’ of the time.
