Preliminary Studies on Nutrients Removal Potential of Selected Aquatic Plants

Abstract

Aquatic plants can remove nutrients (P&N) from sewage or industrial wastewater through accumulation. To identify aquatic plant species that will be good at removing N and P from contaminated water, 10 plant species were screened for their capability to remove N and P in aqueous solution using standard Nitrogen (10 Mg/L NO3-N ) and Phosphorus ( 8.0 Mg/L PO4-P) solutions. The result indicated a 50 fold variation in P and N uptake by the plants. A significant correlation (P<0.05) between total biomass unit per dry surface area and nitrogen concentration in total biomass unit was observed, indicating that those species with large unit surface area are good accumulators of nitrogen in the aquatic system. Phosphorus showed poor correlation with all the plant species. This study had identified some aquatic plants as good potential nutrient removers especially in wetlands.

Résumé

Les plantes aquatiques peuvent enlever des substances nutritives (P&A) des vidanges ou des eaux de vidanges industriels. Pour identifier les especes de plantes aquatiques qui seront bonnes a enlever A & P des vidanges,10 especes de plantes ont ete etudiees pour leur capacite d\'enlever A & P dans une solution aqueuse se servant d\'Azote standard dans des solutions (10 Mg/L N03-N) et Phosphore (80Mg/L P04-P). Le resultat a evele une variation 50 fois elevee de consommation de P & A par les plantes. Une correlation signicative (P<0.05) entre l\'unite totale de biomasse par surface seche et la concentration d\'azote dans l\'unite totale de biomasse a ete remarquee,ce qui inque que les especes ayant de larges unites de surface sont de bonnes accumulatrices d\'azote dans le systeme aquatique. Le Posphore a revelee une faible correlation avec toutes les especes de plantes. Cette etude a identifie quelques plantes aquatiques comme de bons decapants potentiels de substances nutritives surtout dans les terres humides.
