Extent of implementation of collection development policies in academic libraries in Imo State

Abstract

The study is a survey research on the extent of implementation of collection development policies in academic libraries in Imo state. The population of the study comprises five (5) academic libraries in the area of study. The academic libraries understudy are: Imo State University Owerri (IMSU), Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education Owerri (AIFCE), Federal Polytechnic Nekede and Imo State Polytechnic Umuagwo. The questionnaire was used as the instrument of the study while seven (7) questions were used as a guide to the research. The questionnaire was divided into two sections, section A and B. Section A dealt with questions on Biodata while the B section contains three (3) research questions which dealt on the main subject of the study. Data was analyzed using tables and simple percentages. The findings of the study showed that eighty (80%) of the respondents had a collection development policy which are documented. Sixty (60%) of the respondents indicated high implementation of the collection development policy while forty (40%) indicated moderate implementation of the collection development policies. The researchers recommended that academic libraries should have a written collection development policy which should serve as a guide to their acquisition of resources.
