The Role of Library Users in Enhancing the Status of Information Resources in Nigerian Agricultural Research Libraries

Abstract

Information resources in all formats are vital to effective information delivery system in library and information centers. In the global information age, where information travels within space and time, there should be a holistic approach to the acquisition/organization of information resources in order to add value to information delivery to end users. This paper studied the role of library users in enhancing the status of information resources in Nigerian Agricultural Research Institute Libraries, using questionnaire method to elicit information from 809 end users drawn from 12 agricultural Research Institute. Out of the 809 questionnaires sent out, 500 were duly filled and returned. Result shows that, Agricultural Research libraries stock quality but obsolete print information resources with very few electronic resources; and users have inadequate knowledge in accessing the e-resources. Scientist were observed to constitute the major users of the resources. Users were allowed to make input on how best to improve on the resources by suggesting areas to be improved upon for effective library service commensurate with modern global information delivery.
