Analysis of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) facilities in Universities in Imo State

Abstract

This study examined the types of ICT facilities available in universities in Imo State, the rate of use of these facilities by the students and the problems associated with the students’ use of these facilities. Survey design was used for data collection. From a sample of 677 respondents selected from the two universities in Imo State (314 students from IMS U and 363 from FUTO), a total of 620 respondents duly completed the questionnaires. Descriptive statistics such as means, charts, percentages and frequency tables were used for analysis. The study revealed that ICT facilities such as compu ters, internet equipment, CDROM, t elephones, multimedia equipment, e -databases etc. are available in universities in Imo State. The rate of use of ICT facilities was highest for computer, internet and telephone and lowest for multimedia facilities. The study indicated that inadequate funds were a major problem that militates against the use of ICT facilities by students in universities in Imo State. It is thus recommended that there is need for proper funding of the universities to enable them provide facilities for their students.
