Trends in Public and Private Support for Privately-Owned Cultural Institutions in Nigeria: The Example of the International Centre for the Arts, Lagos

OJ Umukoro

Abstract

Arts funding is a very important discourse which has become a crucial one in the world today, especially in the developing countries, and it can no longer be legitimately glossed over. This is because the developing countries want to bridge the wide gulf between them and the developed countries. The paper is thus aimed at establishing the need to recognize and support the arts in the development of culture. In the process, an attempt is made to examine significant developments and trends in public and private support for the arts in relation to privately-owned cultural institutions in Nigeria. Particular  reference is made to the International Centre for the Arts, Lagos (ICAL). This is with a view to examine the extent to which they have been enjoying the support of the public and private initiatives.
