Teaching Science To Students With Special Needs

Abstract



This paper highlights the significance of science education to the students with special needs. It traced the evolution of science education in Nigeria school curriculum back to the inception of Western education in Nigeria since one hundred and twenty years ago. The concept of science and its definitions were briefly touched. The benefactors of special education or those refer to as special needs individuals are equally emphasized in the study. The paper equally emphasized the relevance of science to the children with special needs as a way of fulfilling their fundamental human rights. In order to achieve this, reference was made to conducive learning environment and appropriate teaching equipment to facilitate the teaching of science. Various strategies for teaching science to children with special needs were also discussed. It was concluded that the denial of science education to individuals with special needs due to their disabilities would amount to denying them their fundament human rights.
