Transformation of explicit shift schedule model to its implicit equivalent

Abstract

Explicit and implicit shift schedule models are currently in use for manpower planning in many establishments. However, the transformation of an explicit shift schedule model to its implicit equivalent which this paper focuses on is yet to be addressed. We numerically illustrated and compared an explicit shift schedule model with its implicit equivalentusing queueing theory generated minimum service requirements as RHS values of the constraints. The results show that the implicit shift schedule models have fewer number of shift variables with less computational effort and provides
details of the break types, time and the corresponding number of employees that should be allowed at each break window so as to minimize total labour cost.
