The Design And Development Of A Double Glazed Gape – Roof Shaped Solar Dryer For Cassava Pellets

SI Iwuoha

Abstract

A double glazed gape roof shaped solar dryer for cassava pellets is designed and developed. The dryer consists of a solar absorber plate made of galvanized iron sheet (22 gauge), coated mounted on a wooden box covered at the top with the double glazed gape roof. One end of the device is open, while the other end is coupled to a drying chamber of specified dimensions. The drying storage container houses the cassava pellets. On exposure of the developed dryer to the open for solar heating, the hot air in the solar collector plate (absorber) enters the drying chamber by natural circulation.
While the heated air flows over the pellets moisture is extracted from the products. By this means, the cassava pellets achieve about 70% moisture, reduction, making it possible for the preservation for the pellets for long periods of time.
