Electronic resources use by librarians in federal universities in South-Western, Nigeria.

Abstract

This study investigated electronic resources use among librarians working in public universities owned by federal government of Nigeria in South Western part of the country. Descriptive method was used in carrying out the study. A total number of one hundred and fifty (150) copies of questionnaire were distributed, however, one hundred and twenty-four (124) copies were returned. Three research questions were raised. Tools used for data analyses werePercentages, mean and standard deviation. The results indicated that librarians in federal universities in south-western Nigeria were well informed of the available electronic system in their respective institutions, that frequency of use of electronic resources by librarians is high and the purposes of electronic resources use by librarians in south-western Nigeria include the following: it enables them to investigate discovery trends; it influences librarian research productivity; it is used for academic purposes; it is used to keep abreast of happening in library practices; it assists in writing articles for personal development; it is used to exchange idea with colleagues, it influences citation rate of publications; and it is also used to determine relationship in research activities. It can therefore be concluded that usage and frequency of use of electronic resources among librarians in federal universities in south-western part of Nigeria is high and more so, the purpose of use is well defined.
