Information literacy skills for the utilization of e-library resources among students in tertiary institutions in Nigeria

Abstract

In the present digital environment, finding relevant information is now an arduous task as a result of the avalanche of information over the internet. It is therefore requisite that students especially in higher institutions of learning acquire relevant information literacy skills in order to navigate through the web and have access to current and authentic information. Information literacy skills incorporate navigation skills, selection and evaluation skills as well as the ability to use information. These skills enable individuals to handle the changing contents of computer and information resources as well as the search for those resources. This study focused on information literacy skills for the utilization of elibrary resources among students in tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The objective set for the study is to reveal the information literacy skills for the utilization of e-library resources in tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The study adopted literature-based approach to source information from books, journals, periodicals and other publications both manual and online. Furthermore, the paper conceptualized information literacy and e-library. Thus, Information Literacy skills for utilization of e-library among students are summarized as follows: computer skills, library skills, publishing skills, tool skills (information technology), and resources literacy. Finally, the study recommended that information technology/ICT should be incorporated in the school curriculum and also the librarian should organize information literacy skills programme to enlighten students on the utilization of e-library resources.
