Review of agriculture and agri-food sector performance in the Chinese economy

Abstract

This paper investigates the specific performance of agriculture and agri food sector in Chinese economy during the reform period 1978-2002. China has made significant progress in agriculture and agri food sector and achieved self-sufficiency in food supply during this period. Technology advancement, institutional arrangement and government policies have played important roles in China's agriculture and agri food sector, in its efforts to make food available its the entire population. Chinese government policies allocated more resources for research, and development as well as utilized modern, advanced farming technologies and inputs. China encouraged the development of export-oriented agriculture and food processing industry to convert raw farm products to value added finished consumer products. This has been a powerful tool for economic development in the country.
