Abstract

A pre-impact assessment of NO2 and O3 in a proposed project area for associated gas gathering in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria has been conducted. Passive samplers (diffusion tubes) which are devices capable of taking samples of gaseous pollutants from the atmosphere through diffusion to their interior and subsequently trapping them on an adsorbing material without the active movement of the gas through the sampler were utilized for this study. Monitoring was done for 8 months to include the rainy (May - August 2000) and dry (November 2000 - February 2001) seasons. Results available indicate low levels of NO2 and O3 in the proposed project area with annual ranges of 4.10 - 11.48 µgm-3 NO2 and of 2.72 - 3.78µgm-3 O3. Temporal and spatial variations were observed in the obtained results.
