Effects of solution focused brief counselling techniques on secondary school academic underachievers in Ilorin Metropolis, Nigeria

Abstract

This study investigated the effects of solution focused brief counselling technique on secondary school underachievers in Ilorin metropolis, Nigeria. Quasi-experimental design involving pre-test post-test control group with one experimental and control groups was adopted for the study, while purposive sampling procedure was used in selecting two senior secondary schools with high rate of academic underachievers, fifteen (15) respondents were selected from each school, making a total of thirty (30) samples. Academic Achievement test developed by the researchers was the instrument used for the collection of data in this study. The paired sample t-test and ANCOVA statistical tools were used to test the two hypotheses raised. The findings showed a significant effect of solution focused brief technique (t = 20.378, p = 0.000) in managing academic underachievement of secondary school students. The result found no significant differential effect of solution focused brief technique (f = 0.450, p = 0.505) in managing academic underachievement of male and female secondary school students in Ilorin metropolis, Nigeria. Based on the findings, the researchers recommended that school counsellors, psychologists and teachers should be encouraged to use solution focused brief counselling technique in managing academic underachievement among secondary school students. The school counsellors, psychologists and the teachers should be encouraged to use the technique in improving academic achievement of male and female senior secondary school students.
