Influence of self-help group programmes on women empowerment in Ilorin Metropolis, Kwara State, Nigeria

Abstract

This study examined the influence of self-help group programmes on women empowerment in Ilorin Metropolis, Kwara State, Nigeria.  his study was a descriptive survey type. The population for this study comprised all women in Ilorin Metropolis while a total of number of  300 women was sampled using a simple random sampling technique. A researcher-designed questionnaire titled Self-help Group  Empowerment Questionnaire (SGEQ r= 0.82) was used to elicit information from the respondents on the influence of self-help group on  women empowerment in Ilorin metropolis. Two hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance and the results showed that there  was a significant influence of self- help group programmes on women empowerment (r (298) = 0.763; p<0.05), there was a significant  influence of self- help group programmes on community development (r (298) = 0.691; p<0.05).Thus, it was recommended that  Government should remove major impediments to women empowerment through self-help groups both at the local, state and federal  level, this will give them the opportunity to perform effectively in other developmental programmes they venture into.
