Abstract

The experiment was conducted at the Research and Teaching (Nursery) site of the Federal College of Agriculture, lshiagu to assess the effect of nursery media on the germination and early growrh of Dennettia tripetala in the derived savanna. Top soil, peat soil and river sand were collected, processed and analyzed and five media were formulmed in the following ratio: 1:0:3, 2:1:3. 1:2:3, 2:1:1 and 3:2:1. The results obtained shows significant difference (p>0.05) on seedling emergence on medium 3:2:1. Seedlings growth vigor was significantly better in medium 3:2:1. Similarly, plant heights, total number of leaves were also observed to have increased in medium 2:1:3. The effect of media on seedlings germinate on and growth suggest the need for further evaluation of media for different unexploited tropical tree crops to know the appropriate medium for each species that will ensure the production of vigorous seedlings.
