Developmental implications of a region: the case of the Niger Delta

E.K. Bribena

Abstract

Oil mineral exploration and exploitation ordinarily should bring in enormous resources to sustain development in the areas where such activities are carried out. But in Nigeria, they have become serious impediment to regional growth and development, as apparent neglect spanning several decades have made people in oil-bearing communities of the Niger Delta region of Nigeria restive, sometimes belligerent. Accordingly, this paper focuses on the ‘Niger Delta and the developmental implications’ within the Nigerian polity. The paper explores the impact of oil mineral production activities in the Niger Delta in terms of environmental degradation and the regulatory challenges posed by Transnational Oil Corporations (TNOCs).
