Ethnic Militias and Criminality in the Niger-Delta

P Okumagba

Abstract

The proliferation of ethnic militia and their activities in Nigeria, particularly
in the Niger Delta region has moved from the closing of flow stations to
kidnapping for ransom. The aim of these militia groups have changed from
asking for fairness and equity in the distribution of the wealth of the Nigerian state into a serious form of criminality especially the kidnapping of indigenes and expatriates for ransom. The activities of these groups have adverse economic and security implications for the region and the nation at large. It is against this background that this paper examined the activities of ethnic militia and the consequences of their activities for the Niger Delta Region. Finally, the paper proffered solutions to the continuing crisis of militancy in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria.
