Abstract

A microcontroller trainer is described, which is intended for training of university, polytechnic and vocational-centre students in the interfacing of hardware and writing of programs in a microcontroller environment. The machine uses the SGS-THOMSON ST62xx family member ST62E10 microcontroller chip to perform functions such as driving a seven-segment LED display, displaying waveforms on an oscilloscope, relay energization, key display and various other functions. The choice depends on the trainee and the tutor. It is capable of demonstrating the conversion process from hexadecimal number to binary numbers is done, and the facility exists to connect the trainer to a personal computer. An overview of the circuit design and construction is given. The work was undertaken in the University of Zimbabwe to enhance the practical teaching facilities of the Department of Physics.
