Flow Cytometry in a Resource-Poor Tertiary Institution in Edo Central Senatorial Zone, Edo State, Nigeria: A Narrative Review

Abstract

Flow Cytometer, a powerful diagnostic tool, is underutilized in resource-poor tertiary institutions in Edo Central Senatorial Zone, Edo State, Nigeria, due to limited resources, infrastructure, and expertise. This review highlights the benefits of implementing flow Cytometry services, obstacles to adoption, and proposes solutions.  A holistic approach, involving targeted funding, capacity building, and innovation, can bridge the technology gap, enhancing diagnostic capabilities and healthcare outcomes. Strategic planning, collaboration, and investment are crucial for implementing flow cytometry services in a resource-limited settings, which can help boost diagnosis, monitoring, and research in hematology, immunology, and oncology, and propelling medical advancements. Methodology: Study Design: A comprehensive review of existing literature on flow cytometry, its applications, and challenges in resource-poor settings. Data collection: Relevant studies and articles were sourced from academic databases, including PubMed, Google Scholar, and local research repositories. Inclusion Criteria: Studies published in English, focusing on flow cytometry applications, challenges, and benefits in resource-poor settings, particularly in Nigeria. Data analysis: Code-based analyses were used to identify key themes, challenges, and benefits associated with flow cytometry in resource-limited settings. Conclusion: Flow cytometry in resource-poor tertiary institutions in Edo Central Senatorial Zone, Edo State, Nigeria, presents both challenges and opportunities. Despite the limitations, implementing flow cytometry can significantly enhance disease diagnosis and research capabilities.
