Late presentation of congenital diaphragmatic hernia: A rare case

Abstract

Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is a structural defect caused by inadequate fusion of the pleuroperitoneal membrane forming the diaphragm, allowing peritoneal viscera to protrude into the pleural cavity. It affects nearly one out of 2500 live births. Herein we present a unique instance of a latepresentation in a 2-year-10-month-old male, living in a refugee camp with poor access to quality medical care. The child was misdiagnosed as having a congenital heart defect associated with dextrocardia, however, underwent successful surgical repair of the diaphragmatic hernia. This report highlights the diagnostic challenges in a resource-limited setting.
