Abstract

In recent times, it has become increasingly necessary for surveillance systems for monitoring purposes. In the years past, there had been reliance on human surveillance which was achieved by deploying personnel near sensitive areas for constant monitoring of changes. The challenge with this approach is that human efficiency is limited by so many factors including the mental state of people, fatigue, and inaccuracy, hence, the need for the deployment of a mobile robot that can operate in remote locations. Also, the high cost of providing sophisticated surveillance systems made affordability very difficult for many people. Therefore, it became very necessary that a cost-effective and yet highly efficient system needs to be provided. In this paper, a computer-based robotic system was designed and developed for remote sensing operations in such areas as homes, industries and offices utilizing a wireless camera, HC - 05 Bluetooth module, Arduino board, relevant digital components and Personal Computer. For the control mechanism, a Graphical User Interface (GUI) was developed using C# Programming language and controlled from the Computer. A High-Definition camera mounted on the robot performs the surveillance by navigating through obstacles with the help of sensors. It had the ability to record video or pictures of surrounding areas with its camera eye and transfer the same to the desktop App using wireless communication between the Bluetooth module and the Computer. Although the robot can be helpful for spying purposes in war fields, industries, homes, and offices, the images provided are for indoor testing of the system. It provided accurate information during operation and has a low cost of implementation in terms of operation and maintenance.
