Abstract

Selon, eux la traduction; doit être axée sur Non verbum de verbo, sed sensune experiencere de sensus » (of expressing not word for ward but sense. for service or (figure for figure).

The Notion of Discourse in the Process of Pragmatic Translation

Communication and language are inseparable from man. Once there is a plurality of language, translation becomes imperative as the only solution to the punishment of the biblical Tower of Babel. It is incontestable that translation is indispensable in every sphere of human life and as a result, proponents of theories of translation and translators have found  themselves in the task of coming up with an all embracing definition, process and nature of translation. However, the idea and thought of Ciceron and Horace on the nature of translation offered a clear direction to theorists of translation and translators. For Ciceron and Horace, the act of translating must be anchored on non verbum de verbo, sed sensune experiencere de sensus. In other, wards, the act of translating does not operate on word for word translation but only performed on the meaning of the discourse (message). This paper aims at applying the notion of discourse to the translation of a pragmatic text (judicial discourse)

Keywords: Discourse, Meaning, Process.
