Collective Bargaining and Attainment of Organizational Goals:A study of Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), Aba Centre

Abstract

Collective bargaining is a vital instrument in settlement of disputes as well as arriving at a
collective agreement, machinery for negotiation between the employers and employees. This paper
seeks to investigate the role of collective bargaining in industrial conflict resolution and personnel
management for attainment of organizational goals, using Enugu Electricity Distribution (EEDC),
Aba center, Pluralist theory of industrial relation was adopted as framework of analysis. The
methodology was expository research method hence, data were sourced from primary
(questionnaire, interview) and secondary sources. Data were analyzed using chi-square. The paper
reveals that collective bargaining is the veritable tool for conflict management and resolution in
the organization; collective bargaining as a tool for conflict resolution has contributed to
productivity and organizational harmony. The paper recommends; dialogue as instrument of
collective bargaining between union and management; reduction in information hoarding by
management especially, as it concerns staff welfare as well as cordial relationship with the
management and the workers.
