Abstract

This study was conducted to assess the diversity of bird species in the Phu My Species and Habitat Conservation Area, An Giang Province during the dry season of 2024. Field surveys were carried out for 5 days, from March 27 to March 31, 2024, in both the buffer and core zones of the conservation area. Line transect and point count methods were applied, supplemented by interviews with local residents to gather information on rare bird species. A total of 58 bird species belonging to 35 families and 12 orders were recorded. Notably, the study documented the first record of the Dusky Warbler (Phylloscopus fuscatus) in the conservation area. Additionally, the Grey-headed Lapwing (Vanellus cinereus) and Little Grebe (Tachybaptus ruficollis) were re-sighted and documented with photographs and specific coordinates for the first time since 2021. Significantly, the Sarus Crane (Grus antigone), a migratory species of high conservation value, was observed and photographed with up to 9 individuals at a specific location over consecutive day. The research findings provide crucial scientific data, contributing to a better understanding of avian diversity during the dry season, particularly for migratory and conservation-significant species in the Phu My Conservation Area, thereby supporting the proposal of effective management and conservation measures.
