Abstract

The study investigates the pros and cons of the sudden imposition of ELT in higher education for scientific fields and its impact on both lecturers and students. A mixed methods approach was employed including 15 days of in-class observation and interviews with 15 lecturers from various scientific departments at Ibn Khaldoun University of Tiaret. The findings highlight the need for a gradual transition that respects the principles of bilingual education while incorporating EFL in the teaching of scientific disciplines. Thoughtful decision-making, comprehensive planning, and ongoing evaluation are crucial to addressing the challenges and ensuring a successful integration of ELT instruction at the university level. By bridging the gap between bilingual education and sudden language transitions, Algeria can create an environment that promotes linguistic proficiency and scientific excellence, preparing students for a globalised world. This research provides valuable insights for policymakers and educational institutions implementing language transitions.
