Traditional Medicines in Ethiopia: Challenges in Protection and Risks of Possible Loss

Abstract
Traditional medicine has been widely practiced in Ethiopia. However, the extent of use and the number of medicinal products have been steadily declining due to gaps in legal and institutional protection. In the absence of an effective regulatory and institutional framework, traditional medicinal practitioners have been applying self-policing through secrecy in the sources of the medicinal products and their processes. These secretive methods are unreliable and hamper the transfer of the practices, processes and wisdom to future generations thereby causing steady regression and loss of traditional medicinal wisdom. This article examines possible legal solutions that could possibly elicit undisclosed traditional medicinal knowledge and products to enrich the public domain. The research method is doctrinal with some empirical data to support doctrinal findings.
