COMMENT: Gaps in the Legal Protection of Traditional Medicinal Knowledge in Ethiopia (Amharic)
Abstract
A comprehensive sui generic legal protection for traditional medicinal knowledge could enable Ethiopia to obtain wide-ranging benefits from the sector and preserve it for future generations. Despite the long-lived accumulated traditional knowledge, traditional medicinal knowledge is susceptible to bio-piracy, decline in traditional medicine and its gradual extinction due to the absence of proper administration and protection. Traditional healers are hesitant to share their medicinal knowledge owing to legal insecurity. This comment examines the sufficiency of international, national and regional legal protections given to traditional medicinal knowledge and the institutional frameworks in Ethiopia. There is a need for a comprehensive legal framework in Ethiopia, especially with regard to sui generic legal protection to traditional medicinal knowledge. Moreover, the gaps in the institutional framework require the establishment of an independent institution in charge of its administration.
