Partial edentulism and its association with age, gender, arch and occupation

Abstract

Background: Partial edentulism has been defined as one or more missing teeth in the dental arch factors such as age, gender, occupation have been showed to be a risk factor.
Objective: This study aims to determine the association of these factors with partial edentulism.
Method: This was a retrospective study carried out at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Calabar, Nigeria. Patient's records necessary for this study were retrieved from the clinic log book and laboratory job cards. Information retrieved included age, gender, occupation, missing teeth and the arch involved.
Results: A total of 118 patient's records were retrieved, male to female ratio was 1:1 while most of the patients (29.7%) were between age 31-40years with a mean age of 44.2 ±1.85years.
Conclusion: Missing teeth were more in the maxilla and there was an association between age, arch and missing teeth.
