A performance case study of monocrystalline and polycrystalline solar panels in Port Harcourt, Rivers State
Abstract
An outdoor experiment was conducted to evaluate the performance of monocrystalline and polycrystalline solar panels in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria, over a 63-day period. The research evaluated the efficiency, fill factor, and overall performance of both panel types under varying environmental conditions, including solar irradiance and temperature. Data were collected on voltage, current, power output, irradiance, and panel temperature to assess the impact of the region's climate. The results indicated that monocrystalline panels consistently outperform polycrystalline panels in terms of efficiency and stability, despite similar environmental influences. While monocrystalline panels are more efficient, they are also more costly, making them a better choice for regions with high ambient temperatures, such as Port Harcourt. In contrast, polycrystalline panels offer a more affordable alternative with slightly lower efficiency. This research shows the importance of balancing cost and efficiency when selecting solar panels for regions with similar climatic conditions. The study concluded that both panels possess their unique advantages and disadvantages, hence their choice depends on the specific needs and requirements of the project. The study further recommended the need for the extension of the duration of the study to about a year and six months to ensure the coverage of the seasons in Nigeria (rainy and dry/harmattan) and observe if there would be a difference in their performance
