Psychogenic infertility and adoption

Harold Cooper

Abstract

It is suggested that a lack of normal maternal nurture is the most important factor on which the relatively high incidence of psychiatric disturbance in adoptees is to be explained. Psychogenic infertility is discussed and the psychodynamics thereof related to those responsible for the rejection of adoptees by their psychologically infertile mothers. A psychogenic infertility-adoption syndrome thus emerges. An illustrative case is reported. In the discussion, recommendations are made whereby an improved situation can be achieved in respect of both the treatment of infertility and the management of adopting mothers.
