BIOSTATEMENT
A. WHO IS ME
I am Mr. Akili Kalinga, a Senior Research Scientist working with Tanzanian National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) since 2000 when I was employed on permanent terms. I am a holder of Master of Public Health(MPH) since 2007 and currently finalizing my PhD programme in malaria diagnostics. So far, I have published a total of 25 papers in peer review journals and over 30 technical reports. I have attended and presented in over 15 international scientific conferences and meetings. I have also been involved in leadership of public institutions and different civic organizations and as member of technical committees and working groups
B. MY CONTRIBUTION TO SCIENCE
- Contribution to research and control of Malaria in Tanzania
I have been involved in malariometric and entomological studies to estimate malaria transmission patterns in southern highlands of Tanzania. I was also involved in countrywide assessment of the community utilization and coverage of impregnated treated nets (ITNs). I participated in the assessment of clinical manifestations and outcomes in admitted paediatric patients. Of recent years, I have worked with Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) of US to conduct both passive and active epidemiological studies in Military health facilities in Tanzania. Under Walter Reed Malaria programme I participated in number of projects implemented to include prospective epidemiological malaria attack rate in military camps, evaluation of malaria rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs), Malaria surveillance and diagnostics quality improvement with Fionet technology, Assessment of performance of health workers and microscopy quality improvement. I have been involved in over 10 projects on malaria research and control in Tanzania and have published ten (10) papers in peer reviewed journals and over 10 technical reports
- Contribution to the epidemiology and control of Onchocerciasis and other NTDs in Tanzania
I have vast experience in the epidemiology and control of Onchocerciasis and other Neglected Tropical diseases (NTDs) especially Lymphatic Filariasis (LF) in Tanzania. Through the training I attended on Medical Entomology and vector (Simulium damnosum complex) control in the then Onchocerciasis Control Programme (OCP) in west Africa and experiences in entomological and epidemiological aspects of Onchocerciasis and through working closely with NTD Control Programme (NTDCP) in the country, I am more than ready to bring my experiences into the implementation of any Onchocerciasis research and/or intervention project geared towards its elimination as targeted globally. I have been involved in over 15 projects on Onchocerciasis research and control in Tanzania and have published twelve (12) papers in peer reviewed journals and over 20 technical reports on Onchocerciasis and other NTDs.
- Contribution to research on crosscutting issues
As independent consultant and temporary advisor to World Health Organization/African Programme for Onchocerciasis control, I have been involved in over 5 project evaluation works in various implementation levels. I have published 3 papers in HIV/AIDS and over five technical reports

Prevalence of asymptomatic malaria infections in selected military camps in Tanzania

Abstract
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2015 at four military camps (Bulombora, Mgambo, Ruvu, and Rwamkoma) of National Service located in regions with varying malaria endemicity in Tanzania. Finger prick blood samples collected from asymptomatic military recruits who had been at the camps for over two months were simultaneously tested using microscopy and malaria rapid diagnostic tests (mRDTs) to detect malaria parasite infections.
Results: Malaria parasite prevalence among asymptomatic recruits was 20.3% and 19.4% by microscopy and mRDT respectively. There was moderate agreement (Kappa=0.724) between microscopy and mRDT test results. A significant difference (p<0.001) of malaria parasite prevalence among the four study camps was observed; ranging from 1.9% in Bulombora to 39.4% in Rwamkoma. The geometric mean parasite density was 11,053 asexual parasites/µl and most recruits (56.8%) had 200 to 1999 asexual parasites/µl. P. falciparum was the predominant (99.2%) malaria parasite species.
Conclusion: Our study found high prevalence of asymptomatic malaria infections among military recruits in the selected camps, and this varied from one camp to another. The study has highlighted that public residence institutions such as military camps can be potential hotspots for malaria infection and therefore should not be skipped in routine national malaria surveillance system for monitoring trends of infections
