Abstract

A five month-old female Alsatian puppy was diagnosed as having hypertrophic osteodystrophy following radiological and histopathological examinations. The haemogram showed mild normocytic normochromic anaemia. The serum calcium and phosphorus were within normal range of values (calcium 9.0mg/dl; phosphorus 3.0mg/dl).

Radiological examination revealed extensive ossifying periostitis, thickened metaphyses and widened growth plate. Both the radioulnar and tibiofibular bones were affected. After palliative treatment the puppy was euthanised at the owner's request due to frequent relapses. The histopathological finding was that of expansion of the primary spongiosa and impaction of the trabeculae.
