Increasing gender equity in vocational and technical education in Nigerian secondary school

Abstract

The essential strategies for increasing gender equity in vocational technical education in Nigerian secondary school was investigated. The writer defined vocational and technical education as a type of training designed to prepare the individual learner to be self reliant in skills as well as specialized areas like masonry carpentry, automobile mechanic, fashion design, shoe making, plumbing work, painting, and decoration etc. to be able to contribute meaningfully to national development. Hence it explores opportunities in vocational and technical education for promoting knowledge and skills. The paper recommended that for increase in gender equity in vocation and technical education to be successful – there is a need to adhere to the following: government has to provide; fund, infrastructure, encourage parents, government and NGOs should provide scholarship awards. There is a need to build more technical colleges in different Local Government Areas
