Abstract

The study investigated level of Principals’ awareness of education laws for administration of secondary school in Rivers State. Descriptive survey design was adopted. The population consisted of 247 principals distributed over the 247 secondary schools in Rivers State. 40% (99) of the principals were randomly selected to constitute the sample for the study. Four research questions and four hypotheses were posed and answered in the study. A 20 item self-structured instrument validated by experts and with reliability established at 0.85 was used to generate data for the study. The 4 point modified Likert scale of Very High Level (VHL), High Level (HL) Low Level (LL), Very Low Level (VLL) was used as response pattern. Simple mean was used to answer the research questions while the z test of significance was used to test the hypotheses. The result among others showed that principals are moderately aware of the education laws that guide effective administration of public/secondary schools and no significant difference between the mean scores of male and female principals’ level of awareness of education laws on the administrative effectiveness of principals in public secondary schools in Rivers State. It was therefore recommended among others that the government and private participants should organize frequent workshops on education law for principals, teachers and students so as to increase their awareness, consciousness and compliance of education law.
