Managing innovative teaching methods for students’ success in public senior secondary schools in Rivers State

Abstract

This study investigated managing innovative teaching methods for students’ success in public senior secondary schools in Rivers State. Two research questions and two hypotheses guided the study. The study adopted a descriptive design. The population comprised 311 principals and 6174 teachers, making a total of 6485 in the three hundred and eleven public senior secondary schools in Rivers State. Sample size was 377 respondents using proportionate sampling technique. The instrument used for data collection in this study was a self-structured scale titled Managing Innovative Teaching Methods for Students’ Success (MITMSSS). Face and content validities of the instrument was validated by three experts in the field of Measurement and Evaluation in the Department of Educational Psychology, Guidance and Counselling in the Faculty of Education, University of Port Harcourt. Reliability coefficient was obtained using Cronbach method, which yielded the following co-efficient: managing innovative teaching methods 0.85, and 0.79 and 0.88 respectively for the two variables. The research questions were answered using mean and standard deviation, while the hypotheses were tested using z-test at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that the ways innovative teaching methods are managed for students’ success include managing flipped classroom and blended learning. It was concluded that flipped classroom and blended learning are ways innovative teaching methods are managed for students’ success in public senior secondary schools in Rivers State. Based on the findings of the study, the researcher recommended that principals should encourage teachers allow students learn content outside the classroom through videos or online first, before coming to class. Also, principals should encourage teachers to combine online and face to face learning to create a more flexible and personalized learning experience for students, for their overall academic success.
