A historical overview of the African People’s Organisation contribution to sport: January– June 1920. Part IV

FJ Cleophas

Abstract

A sport-historical enquiry, for the period January till June 1920, into the official mouthpiece of the African People’s Organisation (APO), the A.P.O. Official Organ of the African People’s Organisation (APO), was undertaken. Research in this area was previously conducted for the period 1909 – 1914; 1914 – 1915 and 1919 (see Cleophas, 2012 & Cleophas & Van der Merwe, 2010a & b). In order to make inferences regarding the connection between the APO and sport, it is imperative that these articles be read with this undertaken research. The APO first appeared on 24 May 1909 as a fortnightly publication on alternate Saturdays, thus becoming one of the early newspapers to be directed at a South African Coloured readership (Adhikari, 1996:1). It carried regional articles written by amateur sport reporters. In this way a window was opened for historians on sport reporting in the early 20th century Coloured community.

Keywords: African People’s Organisation (APO), sport, South Africa.
