Abstract

Umm al-Barāhīn de Muḥammad b. Yūsuf al-Sanūsī est un traité de théologie acharite et est l’un des textes les plus diffusés en Afrique à partir du XVIe siècle. Il a connu plusieurs phases de réception allant de commentaires oraux dans les langues africaines aux versifications et commentaires écrits en arabe. Cet article analyse la réception de ce traité en Afrique au sud du Sahara et met la lumière sur l’érudition islamique et les canaux de diffusion des connaissances religieuses dans cette partie du monde. Il démontre également que l’érudition peut être orale ou écrite, et qu’elle peut parfois passer de l’oralité à l’écrit, comme l’illustre l’exemple du Kabbe.

Umm al-Barāhīn by Muḥammad b. Yūsuf al-Sanūsī is a treatise on Ashʿari theology and one of the most widely circulated texts in Africa since the 16th century. It has undergone several phases of reception, ranging from oral commentaries in African languages to versifications and commentaries written in Arabic. This article analyzes the reception of this treatise in sub-Saharan Africa and sheds light on Islamic scholarship and the channels of dissemination of religious knowledge in this part of the world. It also shows that this scholarship can be oral as well as written and can sometimes move from the oral to the written form, as illustrated by the example of the Kabbe.
