Abstract

Background: Gestational diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by glucose intolerance that occur during pregnancy  resulting in high plasma glucose level, the study

Aim: to determine the impact of Gestational diabetes mellitus on some hematological parameters among Gestational diabetic patients  attending University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, North Eastern Nigeria

Methods: A total of 116 pregnant women aged 20-42years constitutes the study subject out of which 58 are known Gestational diabetics  patients attending metabolic clinic and 58 are pregnant non diabetics attending antenatal clinic which serves as controls. Blood plasma  glucose sample was collected in fluoride oxalate and analysed using oxidase peroxidase method, samples for hematology was collected  in EDTA and analyzed within 3hours of collection using standard manual methods.

Results: The mean±SD are: PCV (32.8±3.4  and32.5±3.0),RBC (3.5±0.6 and 3.6±0.5),Platelet (219.9±54.0 and 204.2±66.5),WBC (6.0±1.9 and 5.3±1.5),Hb(9.7±1.9and10.4±1.7),MCV(93.7±12.2and90.4±7.1),MCHC(29.6±3.0and 32.1±4.7),MCHC(27.7± 4.4 and 28.9±4.8)respectively. And  also correlation was used to compare glucose levels to those of hematological parameters which shows weak negative and weak  positives correlations.

Conclusion: The study of impact of Gestational diabetes on hematological parameters in this region of the country  shows a weak positive and negative correlation with no significant difference between both test and control groups of the study.
